Should you visit Malaga
Malaga has so much to offer that it is a fan favorite for both Spaniards and tourists alike. Situated at the top of the Costa del Sol, the crystal clear Mediterranean waters and white sand beaches are a for sure hit with singles and families. The old town, albeit small by comparison to larger cities and towns, offers fun filled days and nights for shopping, dining and parties. Both young and old can uncover great memories whether it’s discovering the castle or some hidden gem of a restaurant or bar. Keep in mind, the old town especially during the season and holiday events is loud and busy, so booking quarters outside this area may be your best bet. In addition, the hotels can get expensive as can some of the restaurants. If you fly into Malaga, which most do because its location makes train trips rather long, you will need to book a taxi or uber into the main town center which is a 20 minute ride away.
Should you retire to Malaga
Based on our personal observations above, I would say that retiring to Malaga is a good choice if you like the sun and surf, and are okay with having a bit of a drive or walk into the center of the town where it all happens. Outside of the city center, there are numerous new and older places to rent or buy, along with large shopping areas for all necessary and unnecessary items. It is a non-stop top tourist destination, so keep that in mind when considering to move here. Also, it is a bit isolated from other major cities and towns, so you will probably need to own a car to make additional visits to other tourist spots such as Marbella, or book a flight since train trips to other places are a bit long.
For those who seek a mix of excitement, unlimited shopping and a great tourist and beach experience Malaga provides all of that and more! With beach side eateries that have the best grilled seafood to unlimited shopping and nightlife along with historical architecture and an amazing cathedral, this city by the sea is a wonderful city to visit as well as live. And the costs for all of the above range from free to almost nothing. Get lost in the shops, bars and great restaurants as you make your way through the streets of old town. For a truly Spanish experience, spend a few days or a lifetime.
The airport is reached by direct flights from almost all of Spain’s larger city airports. Although the downtown is about a 25 minute cab ride from the airport, with no train service. You can take a train from many major cities to Malaga but the time it takes and the price make taking a short flight much more accomodating. Keep in mind that the old town with its hilltop castle and many restaurants, shops and clubs is fun and exciting, the noise level may be a bit much, so booking a hotel just outside of this area should be considered. The beach is also within walking distance where several restaurants are located.
