Should you visit Bilbao

Nestled in the evergreen mountains of the Northwest of Spain lies Bilbao. Once an industrial city due to its location, natural resources and the Ria de Bilbao river that flowed to a natural port on the Atlantic oceans Cantabrian Sea, Bilbao has transformed its city and river into a leading cultural and tourist destination. Along with the iconic Guggenheim Museum, Zubizuri Bridge, and the Arenal Park, Bilbao is a reasonably priced destination that includes a fun old town, tony town center with upscale shops, a tram that goes to the ocean and fantastic dining. Keep in mind that is rans a lot in the chilly winter months, so summer is your best bet.

Should you retire to Bilbao

Bilbao has fantastic services for healthcare, nightlife, shopping, dining, culture and exploring the city and surrounding mountainous nature all around it. Rentals and places for sale are readily available at all price ranges and types, although parts of the old town can be less desirable. Situated in the mountains with good roadways, you should own a car to explore the surrounding areas. Other options are the tram to take to the ocean where a small town lies, their airport that is close to town or the train that goes to a few large cities like Madrid. All that greenery comes with a price, very wet and rainy winters with only summer months providing a reprieve.

This northern city in Spain’s Basque Country sits in the middle of a beautiful valley with incredible views of the city and its rolling hills. Visit the cities old town, Casco Viejo, for authentic pintxos (small snacks) and to explore Parque Etxebarria where you'll find some of Bilbao's best vistas. Ride the Funicular de Artxanda for even more spectacular panoramas. No visit would be complete without checking out the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum Bilbao pictured above and other local cultural institutions including the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao.

Nestled within the mountain ranges of the north, Bilbao is a very tony city with many well healed residents. Having reimagined itself from an industrial past, the city springs alive with festivals, high end shopping and gastronomy. Walking along the river or passing through the city streets, including taking the tram to the ocean, provides for days of discovery and joy. You can either fly to their nearby airport or take the four plus hour train from Madrid. If you drive, be prepared for traversing some of the most beautiful yet challenging mountain roads.
