A scenic coastal view with clear turquoise water, a sandy beach, and a small town with white buildings at the foot of green hills.

Should you visit Costa Brava

If you enjoy the quiet life, and who doesn’t other than my bratty grandkids, then the Costa Brava is for you. To say nothing of the beautiful Mediterranean waters and beaches that hug the mountainous coast lines through out. Everything seems cleaner, fresher and more relaxed here, because it is. Make note that because it is so far north, the weather is cold during the winter months, and so is the water until mid-summer. From Barcelona going north all the way to the city of Girona near the French border, each nook and cranny overs discovery. But you will need a car, although all of this is only two hours away from Barcelona. Read the section on travel about renting a car, for sure. Motor on.

Should you retire to Costa Brava

If the change in the seasons and a decidedly nip in the air are what you crave, along with a slower and more tranquil pace of life, then the Costa Brava is for you. A bonus is the location just down the way from France and their Côte d'Azur, with all the cool towns like Nice, Cannes and Monaco, all of which you can access via France’s coastal train line! Because many of the towns are more like villages, and many of the more pristine spots require a vehicle, having a car and speaking some degree of Spanish is advisable. The pace is not high-time, but so are the prices. So you got those two things going for you. Besides, Barcelona is just a 2 hour trip away.

Stretching from the resort town of Blanes to the French border, this coastal region in northeastern coast of Spain offers miles of shoreline along the Mediterranean ocean. After spending the day with your toes in the sand at one of Costa Brava's gorgeous cove beaches indulge in a delicious dinner at one of the region's many seaside restaurants. But Costa Brava is not just for beach bums. Whether you're touring the unique Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres or exploring the Santa Clotilde Gardens in Lloret de Mar, Costa Brava is a can't-miss destination on any Spain itinerary. For those with a yen for the ocean, book one of the many boat trips by power or sail and experience the unlimited grandeur of the Costa Brava!

Your easiest and lowest cost way to travel there is to take one of the daily trains scheduled out of the Barcelona Sants train station and within an hour you’ll arrive at the City of Girona. Many options exist for hotels, from the spartan to the sublime. A few days with a rental car which you can reserve in Girona makes seeing this area a perfect trip. Keep in mind that the waters are colder here, even in the summer.
