Should you visit Cadiz
The oldest city in the EU, settled by the Phoenicians around 1,100 B.C., Cadiz has one of the best and largest old towns of Europe. Located on a peninsula with the Atlantic meeting the Mediterranean sea on one side and a large bay on the other, it is a worldly city with unlimited epicurean and sightseeing galore. With many options for hotels and rentals, restaurants, travel, beaches and fun, this city is a for sure go to. You can easily arrive by train, plane or car and even by ferry from some cities. Prices are good and sunsets are amazing!
Should you retire to Cadiz
Based on all of the above including a temperate climate, great beaches and a close proximity to visit so many other great places in the South of Spain, the North of Africa and the South of Portugal, Cadiz makes for a great base to retire to. There is even a US Naval base just across the bay. With that in mind, it is a traditional town with likewise inhabitants. It is not an international travel destination, but rather one that EU citizens enjoy. Finding suitable places to rent for long term or buy can be a challenge, as well as integrating into the local culture.
Located in southwestern Spain, Cádiz is one of the country's most underrated and yet phenomenal travel destinations. As one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe, travelers can expect many historic attractions, from the Torre Tavira watchtower to the grandiose Cádiz Cathedral. You can also explore several beautiful outdoor spaces including Genovés Park and the laid-back beaches of La Victoria and La Caleta. When you want to wind down, Plaza de España and Plaza de San Juan de Dios are excellent places to people-watch.
Like many of Spain’s older cities, it has an old town. But unlike those other cities, the Cadiz old town is really, really old and is one of the largest in area in Europe. Packed with everything from an open air market to numerous plazas, epicurean restaurants of every type and shopping galore, Cadiz is a never ending discovery. Lastly, don’t forget taking a walk or bike ride down to the unending stretch of white sand beaches where you can sip cocktails in the sand.
